Sketching is a fundamental act of design communication, an intuitive practice that conveys ideas and assumptions rapidly and directly. In recent years, the conventional notion of sketching has been profoundly transformed by a proliferation of diverse methodologies, emerging digital technologies and the blurring of boundaries between the design disciplines. While the perception and notion of what constitutes a sketch continues to expand, many designers are reconsidering and expanding upon the historical role of sketching. An emerging dialogue reveals unparalleled synergies between 21st century innovation and classical tradition.

Derek John Draper’s drawings were exhibited at the Centre Gallery New York as part of the D3’s continuing documentation of conceptual processes.
