Europan 8

Mixed use development - Milton Keynes
europan 8 image   detail
On the building level the scheme aims at an efficient subdivision of high quality living units in a perimeter block, providing for a range of lifestyle, age and income options, to suit different groups in the community. At the same time it should retain an identity of the block as a whole. The construction principles developed work with efficient dimensions, suitable for a range of materials and therefore allow responding to market conditions and environmental concerns.

brief
To develop a vacant site to the edge of the main centre of Milton Keynes, as part of the city's planned expansion.

concept
Building on the innovative spirit of Milton Keynes, this submission proposed development plans for a site in Bradwell Common, which focused on the densification of this part of the city, going in hand with improvements of the public realm for its residents. While this proposal addresses the specific conditions of the site in order to create a unique sense of place, the developed design principles could be applied to other locations around Milton Keynes.

The authors of this scheme believe that the key to successful development of the area lies in rethinking the role of the pedestrian and vehicular access in the Milton Keynes Grid and subsequently in its careful modification. Development for sustainable communities must seek to achieve a modal shift so that a greater proportion of trips are undertaken by public transport, walking or cycling. This also includes the allocation of pedestrian-sensitive land uses and building frontage design and the creation of meaningful public spaces within the hierarchy of the spatial structure.
